A MODERN DAY PROBLEM
Texting and walking are common things people do. However, performing these two task together lowers our awareness to the surrounding environment. With a reduced field of vision, the risk of accidents such as bumping into someone or walking into a lamppost becomes more likely.
A UTOPIAN APPROACH
Instead of deterring people from walking and using their phone simultaneously, the garment actually further encourages these actions. An positive mindset was preferred in order to discover the hidden possibilities in this unorthodox approach. To address the issues faced by users, the two legs are joined in order to reduce the walking stride, which in turn provides them with more time to react to incoming obstacles while walking.
CREATING A SENSE OF SAFETY
Since the garment is meant to protect the wearer from dangers, a pair of overalls was chosen as the main clothing since they are historically worn by people performing dangerous jobs such as mining. In line with the concept of safety, green fluorescent stripes were used as a reference to the safety vest worn at night. This additional element hence makes the garment usable at night.
To inform the design language of the overalls, the minimalist aesthetics of smartphones were used. From their clean visuals, concealed joints and premium touch, these features are expressed in the garment through meaningful details, hidden stitches and premium cuts.
